Five Years as a Solo IP Practitioner: Reflections and Insights

Get a Job!

When I started out in law school, I never thought that I would end up being a solo practitioner. I always thought that I would work for someone else. But, my dad worked for himself, so maybe it isn’t super surprising that I ended up running my own show. My pops passed before he could see me start my own solo practice. This month marks 5 years that I have been a solo practitioner. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about calling him up to ask his opinion on something.

Solopreneur

Before my journey as a solo, I was in a partnership that myself and another attorney created. At a certain point, we decided to end the business. When I started out on my solo adventure, I had a specific vision of what the business would look like. Well, as I began, I had too much work to create the type of branding and systems that I wanted.

Problems are good?

Everyone said that too much work was a good problem to have. But I am of the view that problems are by definition not “good”. As the pandemic rolled on in, that was hardly the time for a rebrand. Fast forward to late 2023, early 2024 and I finally was able to roll up my sleeves and start working on that rebrand. I engaged a marketing company to help me out. I described myself as fun but serious. The designer got me immediately. HIs first mock ups of the website were spot on and we barely did any revisions.

Has anyone seen my boss?

As with everything in life, being a solo has its ups and downs. I have more flexibility in some ways, but then I have the anxiety of not always knowing whether I will be able to generate enough work any given month. I enjoy working on my business and in my business, but this life certainly isn’t for everyone. People think that small business owners don’t have a boss. We do though. All of our clients are our bosses if temporarily.

Cheers to five more years!

So that is my short, public, reflection of being on my own for the past five years. I am excited about my rebrand and all the work that I have put into my business systems over the past 6 months or so. I know that it will only feel like 5 days until my next 5 year anniversary, but cheers to the next 5!
