What is World Intellectual Property Day?

Some years back, I was reading about different marketing strategies and the article suggested skipping holiday cards and finding an industry-specific event and sending cards for that event instead.

My industry is intellectual property. So I looked it up and it turns out that there is a specific intellectual property event called World IP Day.

The celebration of World IP Day started in the year 2000 and has been presented annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). WIPO is a global forum made up of 193 nations (including the United States) that sets IP policy, provides IP information, and IP cooperation among the member states.

WIPO was formed on April 26, and for that reason, elected on April 26 to celebrate World IP Day. Every year, there is a different theme for World IP Day. Recent examples have included Women in IP, Sports and IP, Art and IP, IP, and SMEs.

This year’s theme is IP and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future.

With so many recent events seeming less than hopeful, we often need to look to our youth and their different ideas on how to improve our world and our future.

Often young people are very energetic and creative when it comes to problem solving, so this is a very timely theme for this year’s World IP Day! There are many different celebrations for World IP Day across the globe. Many have moved online so you may be able to celebrate this way.
